Daily reminder: Advice comes from many places (Copy)
Daily Reminder series are short articles on key ideas - to get you thinking about health in a whole new light.
We give each other advice all the time throughout our lives. It’s a natural human inclination to want to share what we’ve learned in the hopes it might help someone else.
The challenge comes when there’s a lot of advice floating around on the same topic, or when you’re trying to make an important decision and suddenly everyone seems to have a different opinion. In those moments, it can be hard to know which direction to follow.
Everyone has wisdom and information - so how do you find the answers that are right for you?
To make your way through this confusion, it can be helpful to think of advice-givers as having different levels of insight. It goes something like this:
General: The people who give general advice are often sharing what they’ve picked up over time - from news, media, or what they’ve seen work for someone they know.
Good: The people who give good advice are people who have studied the topic - perhaps working over several years to get a degree or qualification.
Execellent: The people who give excellent advice are those who have lived the topic. They’ve walked the road themselves, learned from the twists and turns, and can speak from personal experience.
Best: And the people who give the best advice are those that have studied it, lived it, and have helped others through it too. With them, you’re not just getting one person’s wisdom, but the collective wisdom of thousands.
Collective wisdom is powerful. There’s no one size fits all, but with enough perspectives, we can get close to the truth.
These different kinds of advice can all be helpful.
Some of the most meaningful guidance comes from people we already know - friends who’ve navigated something similar, family members who’ve faced hard choices, neighbours who know us well. Their wisdom is grounded in real life and is often practical - exactly what we need in the moment.
At the same time, it’s wise to gather thoughts from more than one place, because no single person has all the answers. Information is always evolving - especially when it comes to health - so it’s important to learn from people who stay current and keep up with the latest research.
Seek out trusted sources of wisdom - like Aldora - and share what you’re learning and talk it through with those around you. Aldora can be your guiding light - with content written by doctors who have studied, lived, and continue to help others in this area - and draw on the collective knowledge in your community.
Whatever you read or hear, ask yourself:
Does this person have training in the topic?
Have they personally experienced what they’re talking about?
Have they helped others in this area, and learned from that too?
Do I trust their perspective, and does it feel aligned with where I want to go?
Quality advice isn’t just about good intentions. It’s about experience, perspective, and the ability to see the bigger picture.
When you gather wisdom from all the right places, things start to make a lot more sense.
